The largest city in America without fluoride in its drinking water has decided to change course. Beginning today, 230,000 customers of the San Jose Water Company in East San Jose, Almaden Valley and Santa Teresa will begin receiving fluoridated water due to a 7-0 vote by the water company's directors back in 2011.
Proponents of the change argued that the area that was not receiving fluoride was suffering from poorer dental hygiene than the fluoridated zones in local proximity. However, it was overlooked that these differing 2 zones also consist of vastly different socio-economic structures which has historically had a significantly greater correlation to dental hygiene than a fluoridated water source.
For a issue with such little well-controlled scientific research performed on it, this major US county could prove in 5-10 years to be the observational case study that many have desired to clear the air once and for all on fluoride's efficacy in drinking water for dental hygiene. There are currently over 400,000 people in the county that already have fluoride int heir water, this wave of 230,000 plus another 520,000 will be newly receiving fluoridated water int he next 4 years, and a remaining 700,000 that will remain without fluoride in their water. These numbers make for an extremely strong data-pool of control groups to study and make conclusions based on in the coming years.
