Did you know that most water filters actually make your water more acidic? To us at REVIVAL, that just didn't seem right, so we first set-out to provide a filter that at the very least maintained the neutral pH of the incoming water upon exit. During our development process, we grew more and more in control the pH, far more than we originally expected. And as a result, our ULTRA and Rural have trace amounts of our pH-increasing media to ensure that every REVIVAL filter will produce neutral or slightly alkaline water. After this realization is when we decided to spike a filter with this proprietary media and see just how high we could get the pH to climb. After all, people were paying $5.00 for a pint of alkaline water at the market and maybe they'd be interested in a more cost-effective and alternative from the convenience of their own home. Eventually, we landed on a filter that is specifically designed to increase the alkalinity of incoming water up to 9.5 while still maintaining the ultra-filtration technology that comes in our ULTRA filters.
What is pH and how does pH relate to the body?
Before we can jump to alkaline waters benefits for benefits like slowing the aging process, increasing energy, assisting in fertility issues, regulating bodily pH, or even preventing chronic diseases, we should start by knowing water's general purpose in the body.
With up to 75% of the body consisting of water, it's safe to say that clean water is vital to every aspect of our health.
To understand the benefit for alkaline water, we need to take a quick chemistry lesson. pH stands for "power of hydrogen" and is measured on a 1-14 scale with 7 being a perfectly neutral score. Scores below 7 are acidic with 1 being the most acidic and scores above 7 are basic with 14 being the most basic. It is also important to note that the scale is logarithmic meaning an 8 is 10 times more basic than a 7 and a 10 is 1,000 times more basic than a 7. Above is a chart showing the pH of some common household items for reference.
Studies have shown that human blood is highly sensitive to pH levels and ideally rests slightly alkaline at 7.4. The slightest of fluctuations can result in significant health risks. Luckily, the human body is so much more sophisticated than we can even imagine and rarely has trouble maintaining this balance. Other organs of the body vary in pH range depending on function.
What is Alkaline Water?
Alkaline water is water that has a higher pH than regular neutral water usually due to its abundance of alkalizing compounds including calcium, silica, potassium, magnesium, and bicarbonate.
Potential Health Benefits of Alkaline Water
Penicillin, Botox, Aspirin, Warafin, and 100's of other drugs were readily available well before their health benefits were understood. One truth about alkaline water is that a lack of scientific data to support a hypothesis does make it untrue. "False until proven true" is both detrimental to innovation and regressive to a world-view of pursuing greater things. As long as something can be safely deemed unharmful, many are attracted to alkaline water for it's potential health benefits until things can be proven absolute.
The stomach secretes hydrochloric acid to aid in digestion. After a big meal, pH can drop down as low as 1-2 before the stabilizing buffers have a chance to enter and return the stomach back to it's normal 3-5. This process sometimes results in a condition known as acid reflux. Over-the-counter antacids like Tums are used to stabilize the pH during this re-balancing as too low a pH for extended periods can result in extreme discomfort. Drinking alkaline water with larger, protein-heavy meals is thought to help balance this condition as well and keep the stomach from reaching those extreme acidic levels. Don't worry about the alkaline water somehow cancelling out the stomachs acids making digestion difficult. Just remember, a 1.0 on the pH scale is 10,000 times more acidic than a 9.0 is basic. It's just a gentle nudge to help things get back to normal. This theory was tested in a peer-reviewed article that found water with a pH of 8.8 to effectively neutralize stomach acid and pepsin, making it a possible treatment for acid reflux. (1)
Here are some other interesting conclusions from peer-reviewed medical journals that we've found related to drinking alkaline water:
Drinking alkaline water for 3 to 6 months lowered cholesterol, blood glucose and blood pressure levels in participants. (2)
- silica in drinking water (which increases alkalinity) was associated with a reduced risk of dementia and cognitive decline. (3)
- test subjects who drank alkaline water showed an improved acid-base balance and hydration status compared to tap water. (4)
There are other theories that dive into systemic alkalinity based on harmful diseases that seem to enjoy or create acidic environments that we won't discuss here as it's not pertinent strictly to drinking alkaline water.
If you don't suffer from sort sort of kidney issue that may prevent you from drinking alkaline water, you may want to try it and see how you feel! But most importantly, we encourage you to simply drink plenty of filtered water and stay hydrated. There is nothing more important to your health.
Should anyone avoid Alkaline Water for health reasons?
One thing you'll never hear at REVIVAL is propaganda and marketing non-sense to push product. It's simply not who we are or ever will be. While we acknowledge that no product is absolutely for everyone (which is why we stress options and customization), there are products that are more than likely not well-suited for people with specific health conditions. That said, it is consistently shown that people with Kidney complications should not drink alkaline water without speaking with their doctor as it may cause certain minerals within the water to accumulate throughout the body in an unhealthy manner while decreasing their urine output and blood osmolality.
Not Entirely Sold on Alkaline Water?
If you aren't sure Alkaline water is right for you, we support that. We didn't even set-out to make an alkaline filter; it simply fell in our lap while we were trying to create the best water filter for tap applications. We hope you agree that no substance on earth is more important than water to our physiology and health. We are concerned about the increased pollutants and contaminants in our tap water and hope that you too are seeking to take back the control over the quality of the water you consume. We'd recommend you check out our ULTRA or RURAL filter depending on your particular drinking water situation.
